ECONOMIC, ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE VITICULTURE

At DOWIE DOOLE quality drives everything we do in the vineyard.

Viticulturally, the ultimate expression of quality is in delivering exceptional fruit to make great wines.  Great wines are made from fruit grown in such a way that all the inputs derived from the site: wind, water, soil type, minerality and fertility are interrupted as little as possible in influencing the vine's growth cycle.

Fruit grown in this context should show balance, varietal correctness, character and a sense of place or as the French call it, "terroir".  At DOWIE DOOLE we are doing everything we can to increase bio-diversity in the vineyard and maximise the benefits of diversity.

What are we doing?

  • reducing sprays and chemical inputs
  • planting native shrubs and trees to increase beneficial insect and bird life
  • sowing mixed permanent inter-row swards
  • implementing many organic and bio-dynamic principles
  • introducing Integrated Pest Management
  • implementing sustainable irrigation by using recycled water in many of our vineyards where access to this service is available
  • constantly monitoring soil moisture levels and salinity
  • using natural composts and avoiding chemical fertilizers
  • by using modern technology and efficient machinery we are able to reduce the number of tractor passes per season thus reducing fuel consumption, soil compaction and our overall carbon footprint
